Featured Film – I Am Not a Witch (2017)
Zambia, in English & Nyanja | 93 minutes
Garnering 16 trophies from film festivals around the world (including a BAFTA) and 28 nominations, I AM NOT A WITCH is a potent brew of deadpan humor, light surrealism and vivid visuals, producing a film of intensity and grace. Following a banal incident in her local village, nine-year-old Shula is accused of witchcraft. After a short trial she is found guilty, taken into state custody and exiled to a witch camp where things really get weird. This fable set in present-day Zambia has plenty to say about gender and superstition. It’s a satire, a tragedy and a quasi-comedy; impressively, first-time Writer/Director Rungano Nyoni makes this heady mix work.
