Based on the play of the same name by August Wilson, ‘Fences’ follows Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington), his wife Rose (Viola Davis), and their son Cory (Jovan Adepo) as they struggle to make ends meet in the 1950s. Troy has settled into his life as a garbage collector, though barely scraping by, causing strife and frustration in his relationships.
August Wilson won the Tony Award for Best Play for ‘Fences’ in 1987. The play deals with dreams deferred and what it means to be a man, as well as the struggle to handle family and loyalty. Most of all, this story grapples with marriage and what it looks like when a marriage starts to fall apart.
“What is most remarkable about this film is how thoroughly how painfully, how honestly, how beautifully it answers that question.” – A.O Scott, The New York Times
