Conscience and the Constitution, and Good Luck Soup – smARTfilms: Executive Order 9066 at Eighty
Past Event
Reckoning with Resistance
Conscience and the Constitution (2000) 57m
Japanese Americans, organized as the Fair Play Committee, refused to be drafted from the concentration camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming in the largest organized resistance to incarceration, leading to the biggest trial for draft resistance in U.S. history. Ostracized as traitors by Japanese American leaders and veterans, resisters served two years in prison, and, for the next 50 years, were written out of the official history of Japanese America.
Good Luck Soup (2016) 1h10m
“I don’t want to be Japanese!” filmmaker Matthew Hashiguchi recalls yelling at his father. Growing up Japanese-American in a predominantly white Irish-Catholic neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio, Matthew wondered what made him different, why he stood out. Years later he set out to document his family’s experiences of being Japanese in America before, during, and after World War II. Good Luck Soup explores several generations assimilating into a new culture while preserving their own.
