FEATURED FILM – Lucky Grandma (USA)
2014 | 1h40m | Unrated (language)
In English, Mandarin, and Cantonese with English subtitles as needed.
An inspired and worthy comic noir set in Chinatown, New York. Despite the worry of her family, an ornery, chain-smoking, newly widowed 80-year-old grandma is eager to live life as an independent woman. When a local fortune teller predicts a most auspicious day in her future, Grandma heads to the casino and goes all in – only to land herself on the wrong side of luck by suddenly attracting the attention of some local gangsters. Desperate to protect herself, Grandma employs the services of a bodyguard and soon finds herself in the middle of a Chinatown gang war. This small-scale indie picture was made by first-time writer/director Sasie Sealy (who is clearly going places) and stars a sharp, scene-stealing Tsai Chin who has clearly been places.
